The flu bug and a happy 16th
January 30th, 2008 by Paula

Remember that cold flu I mentioned last week with my son Phillip?  It got us all – except my Anna banana!  She is one healthy kid.  Aches and chills, fever, fatigue, pounding headache and all the fun cold symptoms which are still lingering.  I think this bug has been through the entire school this month.  I really need to open all the windows and get some fresh (cold) air in the house.  Why not, it’s a beautiful day today – 30 degrees and freezing rain…

At least Phillip got sick before his sweet 16 birthday and was healthy enough to celebrate this past weekend.  Saturday he and Sarah went out and she gave him some great smelling cologne BVLGARI (good job Sarah) and a sweet card (he was all smiles).  On Sunday he slept in, his older brothers called him and he had basketball practice and then he picked one of his favorite homemade dinners – Chicken drumsticks, mashed potatoes and cauliflower with Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food ice cream to end his special day.  Happy 16th Phildog :)

A nice long weekend

It was.  Three day weekends are great.  And much needed from time to time.

On Saturday night my oldest, Tony, came back home to spend time with his brothers, spent the night, and then on Sunday morning he took Nick back to UCONN and then headed back to UMASS himself.  So it’s back to school time (and for me too, I start back tomorrow).  On Sunday afternoon we took our youngest son, Joseph, to a friends (Sam) for his birthday (bowling, etc) and sleepover (which I believe they all tried to see who could stay awake the longest) and then Sam’s mom (my friend Robin) brought Joseph home today and visited for the afternoon with her newest addition to their family – three month old Tommy.  It was great to hold a little one again and what a good baby – and a cutie :)  My six year old Anna Banana looked at me, smiled and said Mommy, we need a little baby like that around our house…yea.

So, as of tonight we have sickness in this damn house – again.  My 10th grade son, Phillip, comes home from school and tells me he is not feeling too good – temperature, chills and a cough.  OK.  Then he tells me that his girlfriend Sarah was not in school today because she was home sick…YEP.  All adds up.  They were at the movie Juno on Saturday and then her house…YEP.  Wonderful. How many days until this one goes right through our house?

Stay healthy everyone and thanks Robin for a nice, relaxing afternoon with a good friend :)  Give Tommy another hug for me…

Lori McKenna and a pierced ear

Lori_mckenna_and_band_northhampton_ Last night Tom and I saw Lori McKenna and her band perform in Northampton, Massachusetts at the Iron Horse Music Hall. Mark Erelli opened for her (he is sensational) and Lori and her band put on quite a show.  We had a fun night.  Here is a picture of Lori (we were up in the balcony) but damnit it, it was dark in there and this turned out dark…but we had a great time!  Be sure to check out Lori McKenna in Mom Writers Literary Magazine this summer June 2008!  She is a doll.  Lori is touring in January so check out her site, she just may be in your hometown.

So my youngest son says to my husband and I the other night at bedtime something about his ear…

ME: "What’s that J?  What about your ear?"

J: "I pierced my ear today, uh, with Chris."

ME: "You WHAT?  Where?"

J: "Right here" (pointing to his ear lobe)

ME: "I know that I mean when and how?!"

J: "At school in the bathroom with Chris.  We used a thumb tack…"

I leaned against the door to hold myself up trying to imagine this scene…

ME: "A thumb tack J?!!!  What the hell where you thinking?…Was there any blood?"

J: "Nah.  It was pretty quick…can I borrow some of your stud earrings Mom?"

ME: "NO.  No earrings.  A thumb tack J…?"

J: "Yea, it worked good, see."

It was off centered, but there it was just the same – a pierced ear on my 7th grade son.

The joys of parenting :)

Have a super week!

Look Ma, a swollen finger
January 6th, 2008 by Paula

So yesterday we make the drive all the way to Colchester (close to a 2 hour trek) to watch our sophmore son’s basketball game.  It was our first time there and we were told it would take an hour and 45 minutes tops to get there.  We arrive almost 2 hours later to a game that is just about to start the second quarter – CRAP.  We hike up the bleachers and find seats and scan the court and benches for Phillip.  No Phillip.  I look all around the gym and across the way I see a man talking to him and wrapping his right fingers and handing him an ice pack. Ends up he was in at the start of the game and 4 minutes later jammed his right index finger and was out the entire game with an ice pack.  He was not happy.  Oh well, they won so that was nice.  Still going strong with only one lose this season :)

Better scoot – time to take the Christmas decorations and tree down  :(  I’d rather be sipping hot chocolate in front of a roaring fire and reading a good book.

Wow, I have already screwed up two checks with 2007 (and I knew I would) but it’s too hard to write 2008!  2008?!  Seems like we were just celebrating 2000.  Oh well, Happy New Year everybody!

It is so friggin cold here SHEESH.  Tony and Nick (my two older guys) left last night and headed to Amherst, MA.  Tony is back to working at the UMASS University Health Services and he is studying for his MCAT exam (Medical College Admission Test) that he is taking at the end of this month before he starts his spring semester January 28th.  Congrats Tony on your five straight A’s for fall semester :)  Nick is heading to NYC for the weekend with a group of his college buddies (I’m SO jealous).  I LOVE visiting NYC!  Have fun Nicholas :)

Has anyone read Jodi Picoult’s book entitled Plain Truth? I love Jodi’s novels (such an incredible writer) and have read most of them and I just started reading this one…It’s about the Amish…so far, so good Jodi :)

I’m off to basketball all day tomorrow – YAY.  Seriously, the St J BB teams are doing great and it is a lot of fun so Colchester Vermont, here we come…then, on Sunday, it is time to take all the holiday decorations – and the tree – down.  UGH.  I think I’ll sleep in on Sunday…

OK, time for this mama to think about dinner.  Keep warm (snuggle by the fire) and Happy New Year!!!

Cheers,

Paula
