Dude! I dig FORD
July 31st, 2009 by Paula

So as you may remember, I was recently invited to attend Ford’s What Women Want: Tech & Quality event in Chicago (pre BlogHer).  So I went not knowing what to expect.  And it was really awesome.

The morning started out with all 60 bloggers meeting in the Sheraton’s Mayfair Room early in the morning for some chow (that kinda sucked, the early hour, but ya know, I was kinda hungry, so it was all good. I sat at the table to the far left and met some cool bloggers).

Ford event breakfast

Then we headed out to the charter buses and took a half hour drive to the Ford Plant (chatted with some more bloggers and exchanged business cards, of course).

Ford Plant Chicago

We all gathered in a large conference room and listened to some groovy Ford experts talk about stuff we didn’t know.  At least stuff I didn’t know. Interesting…We were then broken into groups and the tour began.

Ford Learning about design elements of Ford Taurus

Ford Ah, Taurus's massaging seats. Now we're talkin'

Then it was outside to do some serious ride and drivin’…and checking out cool features in all the vehicles.

And then I experienced the most awesome thing ever. I got to test the Park Assist feature. The car parallel parked for me – all on its own!  All by itself! Steering wheel turning with my hands in my lap dude!!!  And it did a perfect park job. Way better than I could do. Ever. Very cool and probably the highlight of my day fo’ sho.

Time for lunch and a break from the heat outdoors – and more mingling and business card distribution…

After filling our bellies we headed to the assembly plant which was way cool. I even got to wear some fancy clothes, a headset and funky goggles…

Ford assembly plant I got my goggles on and I'm ready!

Onward for more neat stuff. Backseat of a Ford Taurus checking out the SYNC demonstration which I really, really love.

Time to head back to the conference room for the Round Table discussion – me in the black shirt (brunette, not the blonde in charge)

It was a very interesting and fun day. I learned so much about what Ford has to offer (since we are in need of a new family vehicle!) LOVED the MyKey feature, the Park Assist feature, Sync, and the fact that I could have a mini fridge in my Ford Flex!  Now that is for me ;)  Of course, I really dream of driving a Mustang someday when the kiddies are all grown up and gone.  Just sayin’….

Thanks again Ford for inviting me. I’d love to come again!

I’d also love to hear any comments from readers or if you have any questions.

FORD ROCKS!

Can you tell I’m a wee bit excited?
July 19th, 2009 by Paula

Hell yeah.  It’s finally here.  The trip to Chicago. BlogHer ‘09.  I was on Facebook the other day and I made a comment about Blogher and someone commented back to me and asked – What’s BlogHer?  You. Are. Kidding. Right?  Though this is my first year attending this conference I have known about BlogHer, been a member at BlogHer.com for over the past two years.  I wanted to go last year but just couldn’t swing it.  But I’m packing it up now and toting the entire family along to The Windy City.  They are excited – have never been. I told them it’s a lot like Boston, only much bigger.

Hope to meet everyone there – so much to do!  Oh, and please stop by the Swap Meet on Friday at lunch time to visit with Mom Writers Lit Mag. We will be giving away copies of our spring/summer 09 issue and have forms for those interested in signing up for subscriptions, so hope to see you there!

Thanks to everyone who commented on Ford’s What Women Want in a car from my previous post. Very interesting mix of what we women look for when shopping for a vehicle.  Things like environmentally friendly to retro flair. I will be getting back to that subject during the conference after discussing with Ford experts and keep ya’ll posted!

Hey, I need to get packing!  Here’s my last minute thoughts on BlogHer…

It’s me, I’m back.  Well, I didn’t actually GO anywhere, just been here, working on a new project that I just launched yesterday. And I am so excited! If you have any spare minutes, you really need to check out this fun social networking site for moms – you really should mamas. And what’s really neat about it is that you could win free stuff. Free!  All you have to do is submit a vlog (video blog) and once a month a momma vlogger’s vlog (hey, I like that, vlogger’s vlog, cool) will be chosen as “the best” and the freebies get sent – and there ya go!  The site has more than just vlogs, there are blogs, groups, a forum, music, photos, important events listed and you can advertise yourself *wink* *wink*  Hope to see ya there!

You may remember in one of my former posts a few weeks back I was so excited because I was invited to attend the Ford Ride and Drive in Chicago the day before the BlogHer conference begins.  Well the event is only nine days away and I am so giddy that I think I might just wet my pants (not really, but you get my point). During this event I, along with 50 other bloggers will get the chance to tour the Ford Chicago Assembly Plant (awesome), test drive the 2010 Ford Fusion (yippee), go on the production line of the brand new 2010 Ford Taurus (whoa), and sample the Active Park Assist that allows you to parallel park with just a push of a little ol’ button (now this I’ve gotta see)!  Anyhoo, the Ford event is called What Women Want: Tech & Quality Event (fancy schmancy ‘eh?) Personally, I think the title ROCKS cause for once someone is asking WHAT WOMEN WANT, thank you very much FORD, I heart you!

So I am a women, yes. What do I want in a vehicle? What’s important to me when I get in my car?

Really, I don’t even have to spend any time thinking about what’s important to me and what I look for in a vehicle. I just know.

1. SAFETY – I’m a mom of five and when I load my kids in the car, I want to feel safe driving the car. Airbags, for me, are a huge plus.

2. RELIABILITY – I not only want to feel safe, I want the car to work. I want the car to perform its required functions and NOT break down. Nothing scares me more than the thought of being out in the car with my kids and the car breaking down.

3. ECONOMICAL – Yes, GO GREEN!  With the economy these days, I think this is on all women’s minds. I know it’s on mine. For the past several years I have been driving a gas hog. Oh it’s an SUV with plenty of space for my large family, but it’s a HOG. I would love a new car. I want to down-size. I also have never owned a crossover or hybrid vehicle, but they are looking better and better by the minute. Why would I want to spend close to $100 a week to fill my HOG’s gas tank?

So my faithful readers, I’m asking you now to share your thoughts on this important topic. When you are shopping for a car, what’s important to you? Really important?  What do YOU want in a vehicle?  Also, if you have any questions about Ford or car quality, ask me now, as while I am at the What Women Want event we will be discussing with Ford experts any questions you might have and then I will be posting through my blog here, and Twitter, results on this topic and answers to any questions you might have. Please follow us on Twitter using hashtag #FordBlogHer

So please, leave me a comment with your thoughts and questions, and keep checking back in as I will be posting more on this terrific topic over the next couple of weeks. Let’s go ladies!

A two wheeler and guilty pleasures
July 5th, 2009 by Paula

The other day we took our daughter to the school’s soccer field to practice on her bicycle – without training wheels.  Mind you she is 7 1/2 years old and still does not have much interest in riding on her Disney Princess bike without those two extra wheels.  We took her anyway promising a special treat (the eating kind – the kid will do anything for food).  I was so excited. This is such a special time in a child’s (and parents) life and she did great!

Anna banana on the Disney Princess TWO wheeler! Woot!

While at the school’s field, I couldn’t help but notice two older women slowly walking by, talking to each other and glancing our way watching Anna.  A few minutes later I looked for them again and you’ll never guess where I found them…

Spending time together at the playground, swinging. Priceless!

Spending time together at the playground, swinging. Priceless!

So last week I saw something on CNN.com asking readers to video and share their “guilty pleasures” and upload videos onto the CNN.com site for the world to see.  Sounded good.  I decided to interview my two sons, Phil and J.  I figured I could find out some things about them that I didn’t know (and maybe wasn’t sure I wanted to know).  Ends up, I taped the interview and couldn’t get the damn thing to upload, so here’s the interview anyway to share with ya’ll!

I’d love to hear from ya’ll!  Come on. What are some of your guilty pleasures (OK, ones you can share!)  :)  Leave me a comment, I’d love to hear!

Dude!  Sending my little brother in Florida big congrats and best wishes hugs!  He qualified for the Florida Open and heads to Vero Beach next week to play more golf – Really cool and so excited!!  Break a leg David (not literally, K :) )
